On Tuesday morning in Court Room B of Denver Immigration Court, the proceeding against Jose Raul Cardenas began.

In 2000, at the age of 21,Cardenas entered into the US illegally to find work. To aid him in this process he bought what was supposed to be a fake social security number. However, when sheriff’s deputies arrested him nine years later he found out that the number was real. By this time, Raul had been married for seven years and also had a 5-year-old daughter.

Contrary to popular belief, marriage offered Raul no legal advantage. Despite the fact that he is now married, he would be required to return to Mexico to be processed. The punishment for this is a 10 year ban on returning to the US.

Now, that he has been caught Cardenas’s last hope is that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will practice discretion and drop his case. Due to limited resources DHS mandate is to focus on the removal of illegal immigrants who pose a threat to public safety and national security. This alone makes Raul a very low priority.

Dealing with immigration can be a difficult and emotional process. If you or someone you know is dealing with immigration problems, you need an experienced lawyer to help you through this time.
